Design Brief

Type: University Project

Time: 2 Months

Team: Solo Project

Build a pocket of any form and a final prototype to scale using materials you selected. Show the pocket’s shape and size. Include elements like buttons, snaps, zippers, or other design features. Carefully construct the pocket using a sewing machine or hand stitching.

Photograph the final design features under good lighting conditions. Knock out the background by isolating the object and applying a mask in Photoshop. Add the object shadow into the mask.

The Problem

Users

Context forming

  • Loose tools

  • Fun colours/design

  • Pencil pouch or bag

  • Soft and a natural free to it

Creation Idea

Making an everyday thing I use more useful and adaptive to my tools, I usually just have all my pencils scattered in my bag, but with this design, I wanted to create a bag for my design tools.

Who are the users

  • designer/students

  • People who enjoy organisation

  • Kids and adults who use sketching or drawing tools

  • Any age range

What the user needs

  • Durability, and longevity

  • Fair pricing

  • Small and portable

  • good quality

  • Blends in with tools and bags

Goals for Problem

My goal is to create a bag that can hold all my loose tools in my bag and also be easy enough to access when i’m in a rush with my work and must have colours I like with some kind of design in the front.

Mood Board

Ideations

Focusing on quick Ideations for the final form, with a emphasis on my original design but moving to expand on that idea

Visual Story

The mood board focuses on the pocket design where I want to keep all my tools safe. I was focusing on travelling bags because they are made for all weather conditions and are very durable. By integrating the rugged durability and environmental resilience found in professional luggage to ensure its safety.

Products’ Construction

Components Measurements

I wanted the measurements to be compact and sizable for all the tools; I made it 16 inches wide and 10 inches high, which allowed me to put all my tool in.

Designing the Pattern

Creation Of Pattern

In Illustrator I created the patterns and printed them out to the exact measurements. I even made a slit for a zipper.

Paper Prototype

Cotton Prototype

Creation Of Dyes

I used white cotton canvas to dye and made a deep green with a very bright orange for the layers.

Creation Of Pattern

After the drying I cut the fabrics to the correct size and used a heavy-duty Singer sewing machine. I had a bit of difficulty with the sewing since the fabric kept getting caught in the machine, and also it was only my second time sewing.

Final Product

Design Details

I created an embroidery design in the back of the final construction. I'm very happy with the way it turned out

Final Outcome

Reflections

Project Constraints

  • 10 week timeframe - alongside other projects

  • Knowledge about sewing

  • The pattern must be handmade.

  • Must be made on Illustrator.

What I learned

  • Taking the slow approach when sewing is better then rushing the machine.

  • Creating my thought process is very important in the design sector

  • I tried the first time using a freestyle pedal in the sewing machine to creating the embroidery.

If I had more time, I would…

  • Create more If you can see some of the stitching is loose

  • Get a heavy-duty zipper; the plastic one was to loose

  • Reiterate the design

  • Do user testing to see if it's actually functional.
